Corporate Profile

Smock Fansler Corporation has been serving the construction needs of Indiana clients for over 90 years. Founded in 1921 by Mr. Kenneth Smock, Smock Fansler has grown from a small trucking and excavating company to a full service-general contractor.  Industrial construction, general construction, architectural sitework, and environmentally-conscious sitework development are the core project types that Smock Fansler constructs.  These include specialty tradework such as earthwork, underground utilities, carpentry and concrete.

In 1965, Mr. Thomas Fansler Jr., owner and CEO, purchased the company and began growing and performing work as a general contractor, largely for industrial clients.  Our industrial heritage is nurtured by Mr. Fansler and the leadership of the corporation’s executive vice president, Mr. Jerry Davee, PE.   In 1982, Mr. Tom Fansler III, joined his father’s business and began developing an emphasis on architectural sitework.  This work builds upon our proficiency in earthwork and sitework and refines it into an artistic delivery of public open space and landscape architecture related projects.  Finally, Mr. Joe Davee & Mr. Bill Fansler have championed our success and ability to undertake general construction and hardscape projects.  SFC’s experience includes work on the Hoosier Dome, the Music Building at IU, Community Hospital North and more recently work on the Indiana Landmarks Site Development, Carmel City Center, and Georgia Street Reconstruction (site of Superbowl XLVI’s Superbowl Village).

Since 1999, Tom Fansler III has served the organization as president and embraces the organizations unique ability to adapt to complex project issues.  The resources of Smock Fansler Corporation include a work force of up to 150 people, in season, and over 60 major pieces of equipment. These resources compliment our management staff to provide our customers with a commitment to their work that it will be done in a professional, timely manner with a concern for an excellent finished product.  Additionally, our management staff and field superintendents have consciously incorporated and demonstrated consistent project completion that includes:

  • Problem Solving Skills - With over 150 years of combined construction experience, Smock Fansler’s engineers and estimators have the ability to evaluate and solve nearly any problem that may occur on a project.
  • Value Engineering -  Serving the AEC industry for over 90 years, Smock Fansler has the capacity to evaluate the most cost effective means to construct a project that will accomplish the Owner’s goals.
  • Safety - Smock Fansler Corporation’s top-notch safety program ensures that all employees are trained in the latest safety measures.  Because of the effectiveness of this program, Smock Fansler is proud to boast an EMR of .76, well below the national industry average.
  • Experience in Sustainable Practices - Because of Smock Fansler’s longtime commitment to the environment, SFC has been using sustainable construction methods for over 20 years, long before it became fashionable, popular, encouraged or required.  Because of this long-time experience, Smock Fansler has “worked out the kinks” that many GC’s are now experiencing as they scramble to learn the latest BMP’s, many of which SFC has followed, nurtured, experimented with, and improved upon from idea to implementation.  It is because of this established position as a sustainable builder that Smock Fansler has been chosen to consult on and construct Green Infrastructure pilot projects for a number of municipalities, including the City of Indianapolis.

Smock Fansler’s experience and talent within the areas of industrial construction, architectural sitework and general construction provide a strong and stable footing for our customers.  Our broad perspective allows us the ability to provide emergency “shut down” work for our industrial clients, high-end finish work for our architectural sitework clients and the capacity to meet the needs of clients requiring general construction.  Our client list includes Fortune 500 companies, large and small manufacturing facilities, institutions, school systems, and every level of governmental agency. We maintain close relationships with many firms from the design and engineering segment of the industry and can rely on their added expertise to assist us in our effort to provide an exceptional finished project.
